"TURN THE WINDMILLS OFF, IT'S SUNDAY" has been written for my children who have begged me to keep alive the story of my youth. My life-style was different to theirs. They find it hard to believe I lived in a tin shed with mud floors and hessian hung on wires to divide the rooms. Electricity and refrigeration were non-existent, and a wireless was held in the same high esteem as a Mercedes Benz is today, if you have one, that is.
We were reputed, as a family, to be so religious we would not allow the windmills to work on Sunday. It was said we penned the roosters and the hens were not allowed to lay their eggs.
Rabbit was our main meat for many years. Dad called it underground mutton. Visitors often mistook a baked rabbit dinner for delicious chicken and would have a second helping. My parents were hospitable, and in spite of poverty conditions, the door was wide open to welcome a neighbour or a stranger. Mum said Nirvana had elastic walls and there was always room for one more.
I trust my story will bring back fond memories to those who read it. To those who held their families and neighbours in high esteem. Homes where Dad was the head, under God, and Mum ruled her domain. Children obeyed their parents.
It is said that families who pray together stay together. I would suggest that families who eat together, stay together. We would not dream of starting a meal until the whole family was seated and Dad asked a blessing.
Memories are good to have and to pass on. My old home Nirvana is twenty miles from Narrabri on the Maules Creek Road. The fourth generation of Browns is still in residence. Although there have been alterations made, I still think of Nirvana as it was fifty-five years ago, when we, as a family, ate and prayed together.
